Answers

1.       b. Santa Claus has a total of nine reindeer to help him pull his sleigh. They’re a magical breed of smaller reindeer that can fly, which is why they land so quietly on our rooftops on Christmas Eve. The names of Santa’s beloved reindeer are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph.

2.       a. The song kind of gives it away, doesn’t it? Rudolf was actually an outcast, until one year Christmas Eve fell on a very foggy night. His bright red nose helped to guide Santa through the fog and Rudolf became the hero!

3.       c. It’s elves that help Santa make all of the toys and presents for all of the good boys and girls all over the world! According to Santa Tracker, there were over 110,000 elves in 2020, and the numbers in the workshop are going up each year!

4.       a. The most common way for Santa to get into houses to leave presents under the tree is down the chimney. Whether he has to use magic to shrink, or you happen to have a very big chimney, that’s his favourite way in. If you don’t have a chimney, however, he just uses his magic to open the door or a window – whichever makes it the easiest for him to get the presents in!

5.       c. Santa gives children on the Naughty List a lump of coal. Aside from the fact that no kids want a lump of coal, it seems that Santa started giving out coal out of convenience more than anything. If he’s climbing down the chimney, there will be plenty lying around, for sure! As much as anything though, it’s an incentive to get yourself onto the Nice List!

6.       a. Reindeer love carrots! They’re a healthy snack that makes sure they have the energy they need to fly Santa Claus through the night as he delivers presents. Plus, they help you see in the dark, which the reindeer definitely find very useful.

7.       b. 21.08 metres! It was made by the Municipality of Agueda in Portugal in a bid to bring in more tourism. Setting the record in 2016, not only was the world’s largest Santa Claus over 21 metres tall, but it was over 9 metres wide and almost 13 metres deep! It showed the jolly guy sat on a giant present and was decorated with 110,000 lights.

8.       a. Kris Kringle is the only of these three names that Santa Claus goes by. Many believe that Saint Nicholas was the original Santa Claus, and over time his name has changed, whilst he has new names added, too. In Dutch, he was known as Sint Klaas, which then became Sinterklass and, in English pronunciations, Santa Claus. Kris Kringle was the name of a gift-giving jolly guy in German and Swiss folklore, whilst Father Christmas originated in England and Pere Noel comes from France.

9.       b. Ho Ho Ho! Can you imagine Santa saying anything else?! The iconic phrase, however, doesn’t mean anything! It is simply the way that Father Christmas chuckles. The big guy is so happy all of the time that he can’t help but burst out laughing!

10.   c. The answer is tan! It was a bit of a trick question though, as Santa has worn so many different coloured suits over the year, but traditionally he worn a tan one. The big guy had worn red suits before, but the famous Coca Cola advertising in the 1920s is credited as making the image stick!

That’s the end of our Santa Claus Quiz! Well, almost… we’re well aware that there’s often need for a tiebreaker, so we’ve included a bonus question. You can, obviously, throw in the Bonus Question just for fun!

Bonus Question

We all know that Santa delivers presents to all of the children in the world in one night. Many say that’s impossible, but he does it! Given that his stops are spread out across different time zones, how long does he have to deliver all of the presents?

a.       42 hours

b.       8 hours

c.       24 hours

Bonus Answer

The answer is 42 hours. Given the rotation of the Earth, a starting point on one side of the international date line and working through the night until he finishes just before sunrise on the other side of the world. It might be more time that we all think, but he does have a lot of houses to visit!
