Why do we have advent calendars?

Apart from a daily treat, the reason we have advent calendars is to count down to Christmas! They started way back in the 1800s, but we’re not sure where, exactly. Our favourite story is that a mother in Germany used to make them for her little boy, so he had a cookie a day in the lead up to the festive season. Then, as a grown up, he started a company and made calendars with doors like those we know today! It wasn’t until the 1950s that they started to contain chocolates, though. Cadbury first made theirs in 1971, but they didn’t become a regular thing until as recently as the ‘90s! Hard to believe, isn’t it? Especially given how popular chocolate advent calendars are today!

When do advent calendars start?

In the excitement of Christmas, it’s easy to lose track of things. Many people won’t pick up their advent calendars until December is already under way – but when do advent calendars actually start? Traditionally, advent calendars start on the first of December and lead up to Christmas Eve. Most of them have 24 treats hidden behind little windows, whilst some have an extra sweet for Christmas Day, too! But they always start at the beginning of December. The word ‘advent’ means ‘coming’, so advent calendars are literally a celebrating the fact that Christmas is coming!
