In Britain there has always been a lot of attention on the Royal family. And as is often the case here at Wholesale Sweets, our attention turned to food – more specifically, what does the Queen like to eat?
We found out things that she won’t eat, namely garlic and onions. Despite being delicious, they’re not allowed on the royal table because unpleasant breath is considered poor manners. Nor is Her Majesty a fan of ‘heavy foods’ such as pasta. Don’t worry, our hearts are broken, too.
But where the royal menu wins back brownie points is with the sweet stuff. The Queen has a massive sweet tooth and is a bona fide chocoholic. Phew! From cakes and fondants to mint chocolates, she loves the lot! And, as it turns out, are the rest of her family.
So, we’ve pooled together our favourites that you can attempt at home, as well as some of our favourite sweets that are perfect for treating yourself as the Jubilee nears.

As we said, the Queen loves chocolate. Former royal chef Darren McGrady confirmed this, saying that her favourite dessert is Chocolate Biscuit Cake by far. Prince William loves it, too! He gained a taste for it as a child at afternoon tea with his grandmother, which lead to him serving it at his wedding. The mouth-watering cake pairs the crunch of rich tea biscuits with no less than 13 ounces of chocolate in McGrady’s recipe. It isn’t too difficult or time consuming to make and is the ideal cake for a Jubilee street party.
Another of her favourite desserts is the wonderfully named Chocolate Perfection Pie. This tart is a creamy treat, topped with both white chocolate and dark chocolate shavings. Again, this is a quick recipe that returns royally tasty results.
But Her Royal Highness doesn’t only satisfy her chocolate cravings with cakes – she is also known to favour the mix of mint and chocolate flavours. This is an easy one to replicate, and could perhaps help you feel a bit fancier when you next enjoy an After Eight or an Aero Peppermint bar!
Everybody loves Cadbury chocolate, and it has the royal stamp of approval. Okay, so it’s actually got the Royal Warrant, but it’s pretty much the same thing! They’re granted by the Monarch themselves, to companies who regularly supply goods to members of the Royal Family or any of their households, and the Queen gave Cadbury the mark way back in 1955. So, next time you’re enjoying a Dairy Milk or sharing a carton of Roses, you can enjoy them knowing that the Queen herself approves.

With a figurehead as obsessed with sweet treats, it’s no surprise the rest of the royals also have a sweet tooth.
As we mentioned before, Prince William used to enjoy a slice or two of chocolate cake with his grandmother. Well, a favourite he shared with his brother is caramel banana cake, which they both adored growing up. And we can’t blame them, those flavours work together perfectly in the BUBS Banana & Caramel Foam sweets. So we can only imagine how good a cake would be!
It’s clear where the young princes get their taste from, too. Fittingly, the Prince of Wales is a big fan of Welsh Cakes. Another down to earth option that you can make yourself, it is said that Charles and Camilla regularly eat the sweet scones with clotted cream and jam alongside afternoon tea. Also known as Bakestones, you can whip up a batch in around half an hour and then relax with some afternoon tea of your own!
There’s another British classic that has a big admirer from within Kensington Palace. The Duchess of Cambridge is a big fan of Sticky Toffee Pudding – but aren’t we all?! According to the former royal chef, Kate likes a dollop of clotted cream on the side. It’s the best way, right?

Throughout history, there have been several desserts either created for or named after the monarchs in this country. Most famous of all is, without doubt, the humble Victoria Sponge. The light and fluffy cake was named after Queen Victoria of course. Sponge cakes were around much earlier than the Victorian era, but it was here that they became linked to the famous Monarch.
In the 19th century, the evening meal traditionally wasn’t eaten until much later in the evening. The 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anne Russell, didn’t like the fact that she was getting hungry in the afternoon, so she requested some light food to accompany afternoon tea. This food turned out to be sponge cake. A fan of her new habit, the Duchess invited her friends over to partake – one of which was Queen Victoria. Quickly, the queen was won over and the custom got the royal seal of approval. And that is how, despite not inventing it herself, the Victoria sponge was named after her!
Another popular classic with its roots found in royal circles is the ever loveable strawberries and cream. It may be a fixture at Wimbledon, but the simple yet effective pudding actually dates all the way back to the Tudor period and the kitchens of Henry VIII’s Hampden Court. Tasked with feeding hundreds of lords and ladies twice every day, there was a need for something as quick as it was delicious. It was in answering these criteria that the kingly combination of strawberries and cream was born. Supposedly they made their debut at a banquet in 1509.
It clearly tastes amazing, otherwise it wouldn’t be such a popular flavour today! From lollipops and hard boiled sweets to things like Lindt Lindor truffles and even fudge, the dynamic duo is as strong as ever!

You may not see the Queen with her own pick n mix, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create a delicious mix that makes you feel like royalty!
Chewy sweets are a staple of almost every pick and mix, and the Ravazzi Gummy Crowns are a regal inclusion in any sweet selection. The delightfully chewy crown-shaped gummies are as fruity as they are colourful!
Another gummy favourite that, surprisingly, makes sense in a royal mix is the Crazy Candy Factory Mini Gummy Burgers. Why? Because the Queen supposedly loves a hamburger! Yep, you read that right. Despite having them without a bun, Her Majesty does in fact love a patty. Something tells us she wouldn’t be a fan of the fruit flavoured gummy kind here, but they’re a favourite of ours! They’re a really fun novelty option that kids are sure to adore.
Given that the Queen’s face is on money, chocolate coins are a delicious treat that would be at home in this mix, too. With white, milk and dark chocolate options, these are a great way personalise your pick and mix. And given that she’s a chocoholic, you know the Queen would approve!
