But most impressive of all is the fact that this year’s Platinum Jubilee is the first time a British Monarch has reached the milestone. Elizabeth II has already celebrated five jubilees and is only a couple of years away from becoming the longest reigning monarch in all of history. Now, onto the answers!

ANSWERS

1.       b. The Queen’s official birthday is usually the second Saturday in June to line up with the Trooping of the Colour Parade, however this year it will take place on Thursday 2nd as part of the extended bank holiday. Celebrating the monarch’s birthday in the summer is a tradition that dates back to King George II – his birthday was in November, but he wanted people to be able to celebrate in better weather.

2.       b. Over the years, the Queen has had over 30 corgis! The first was an 18th birthday present in 1944 called Susan, and she has had them ever since. Her Highness even bred the first ever dorgi (dachshund-corgi mix)! She currently has two corgis alongside a dorgi and cocker spaniel.

3.       a. Throughout her 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II has overseen 14 Prime Ministers so far. She also started a tradition of meeting them weekly and carried it on from Winston Churchill right through to Boris Johnson today. The pandemic has seen the meetings often taken over the phone, but the tradition is still going strong.

4.       c. That’s right, when she was 18-yearz old, the Queen trained to be a mechanic. At the time, non-married women joined to help the war effort, and not only did Her Highness learn to fix vehicles, but it was also where she learnt to drive!

 5.       a. As well as all of the mute swans in the country, Queen Elizabeth also owns all of the whales and dolphins within the waters of England and Wales. This can be dated back to King Edward II’s reign in 1324 and has been the case for every monarch since.

6.       c. The Royal Tea-maker is not an official job. However, the Royal Shoe Wearer and Keeper of the Queen’s Stamps are! With so many engagements, the Queen clearly doesn’t want to get any blisters. That’s why the Royal Shoe Wearer breaks in any new shoes for her! Not as keen on collecting stamps as previous monarchs, the Keeper of the Queen’s Stamps travels the world, adding to and maintaining the hugely valuable collection which is said to be worth over £2million!

 7.       a. Reportedly, in 2015 Her Highness purchased an apartment in New York. It was designed by Lord Norman Foster, who she knighted in 1990, and has worked on countless iconic buildings and structures that include the Gherkin and Wembley Stadium.

8.       c. Queen Elizabeth II is fluent in French! All of the menus presented to her from the Royal kitchen are in French, and she speaks it incredibly well. It not only comes in handy when she visits France, but also the French-speaking areas in Canada, too.

 9.       a. The Queen has no less than 30 godchildren! These include a wide range of people, including other royals, children of her own bridesmaids and even Princess Diana’s younger brother.

10.   c. For many, this may well be something you’re happy to not have in common with the Queen! Every weekday morning at 9am, the Piper to the Sovereign plays for fifteen minutes outside of the Queen’s window. The Piper will also play at official events and the role dates back to 1843.
