Everyone loves a good film. From romantic comedies to action movies we all have our favourites, and when paired with some tasty snacks there’s nothing that can hold our attention like it!
When you visit the cinema, the snacks and sweets on offer are a big part of the experience, and many people will stock up specifically for a movie night. But sometimes the sweets are actually on the screen! There are countless occasions where confectionery makes a notable appearance – and we’re not just talking about sitting on a shelf as a character walks by!
In Hollywood movies, there are plenty of occasions where sweets – American candy in particular – has been a part of the action. Aside from the dopamine rush of seeing your favourite treats on the big screen, matching your snacks to the movie is a fun way to enhance the experience. As you know, we love all things sweets here at Wholesale Sweets, and we couldn’t resist sharing our favourite examples!

This ‘80s Spielberg classic was an instant hit. Everyone remembers the scene on the bike, and the immortal words “E.T. phone home”, but for us there’s another momentous scene that always stands out.
In a bid to lure E.T. out of hiding, Elliot uses Reese’s Pieces as bait. His genius plan works. Later that night his new friend follows him home – and adorably returns a handful of the peanut butter candies! Elliot then uses them again to lead E.T. upstairs to his bedroom where he hides away.
As much sense as this scene makes – because all Reese’s products are irresistible – it is actually one of the first examples of product placement in movies. Supposedly, Spielberg offered the starring role to M&M’s first, but Mars declined.

Released in 1925, this Charlie Chaplin classic tells the tale of a gold-finding expedition which is scuppered by an Alaskan blizzard. Whilst waiting out the storm in a cabin, Chaplin’s character prepares an unconventional thanksgiving meal. No, it wasn’t sweets. It was his shoe. Yep, his shoe!
Obviously, he didn’t actually eat a real shoe. It was a super realistic boot make from the finest liquorice, crafted by the American Licorice Company – aka the creators and makers of both Red Vines and Sour Punch.

There are many iconic monsters in the Ghostbusters universe, but our favourite is obviously Mr Stay-Puft! The marshmallow man is the central figure in the packaging and advertising of the brand that was created for the movie, and he wears his iconic sailor hat and collar, plus a red neckerchief.
Unfortunately, the adorable mallow becomes the physical embodiment of the film’s biggest supernatural threat – Gozer the Gozerian. Once the demigod has taken the form of Mr Stay-Puft.
If you want to roast some marshmallows like the Ghostbusters, the Mega Marshmallows are big, fluffy and fat free, so perfect for the job! Since the movie, Marshmallow Fluff have done limited-run jars with Stay-Puft branding, whilst the character made a return of sorts in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
And how could we forget the famous Twinkie analogy?! If only 35-feet Twinkies were real…
