As winter draws in and the festive season begins, there is one thing that makes everything just a little more special it is your loved ones. Whether you have a quite cosy night at home or invite your nearest and dearest over, it is sharing time with your favourite people that helps make it so magical.

There are so many different things that are perfect for sharing with family. The obvious choice is food and drink, whether that’s a mouth-watering meal or your favourite Christmas sweets and chocolates. But alongside those, it’s good to have some fun and laughs. That’s why we so often play games with our loved ones! We often end up playing the same few games year after year, however. Getting out the same few board games can be boring and after a few years you can remember the answers to repetitive old trivia games. So, here are some different ideas of Christmas games you could play that are a little bit different!

THE KNIFE AND FORK CHOCOLATE GAME

A bar of chocolate on a plate, with a knife and fork

There’s a good chance that you may have heard of this game, but when was the last time you played it? At it’s there is a simple premise, but in practice it is chaotic, ridiculous and hilarious! Plus, you won’t need to buy a new game (maybe just some chocolate)!

For those who aren’t familiar with the game, all you’ll need is a couple of dice, a woolly hat, big winter gloves (oven gloves will also too), a knife and fork (everyone could have their own), a plate and a big bar of chocolate. To set the game up, place the chocolate bar and the dice in the middle, next to the gloves and hat. The aim of the game is to eat the chocolate; however you can only do so once you’ve rolled a six (some play double six). But, you have to do so whilst wearing the gloves and hat and can only use the cutlery, not your hands! Everyone gets one roll of the dice before passing them on, and things get a bit hectic as sixes are like buses – they’ll all come along at once! You might not get as much chocolate as you’d like, but this game is fast paced and so silly that you can’t help but enjoy it! You can customise the accessories too, with scarves and sunglasses – pretty much anything else to make it trickier!

CHRISTMAS MOVIE BINGO

Bingo cards, stamps, and Christmas decorations. Who doesn't love a bit of Christmas Bingo?!

Definitely a game for the movie nerds among us! With some print-at-home bingo cards you are on your way to a brilliant night of fun fuelled by Christmas movie quotes! The game works just like regular bingo, except the caller reads out a movie quote and then, if you know what movie it is from and it is on your card, you cross it off! You can add in actors, too, and for an added element of fun, you can have sweet treats as prizes when you check one off. If you ask us, it’s the most fun way to work your way through a Christmas tub of chocolates!

CANDY CANE HUNT

A candy cane hunt is a surefire way to have a little fun and enjoy a true festive favourite!

You’ve guessed it, this works just like an Easter egg hunt! The little ones will love it just as much, too. With the colder weather and the dark nights, this will be easier to do around the house than outside – but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative. To make things more competitive, you could have sweet gifts and prizes for the winner and setting a time limit is a great way to get everybody fired up. You can hide your candy canes all over the house not just around the Christmas tree – that’s the first place everyone will look! Try to think of places you can hang them, tuck them and then sit back and watch everyone scramble as they try to find as many as possible! You can have a prize for the winner if you like, but the candy cane haul itself will surely put smiles on those little faces!

CHRISTMAS COOKIE DECORATING COMPETITION

Cookies are the most delicious canvas for any artistic competition, right?

Cookies are a popular sweet treat at Christmas, and with icing and a few toppers, you can have a little bit of competitive fun, too. You don’t need anything fancy, something like a simple sugar cookie will do – or you could use gingerbread to help get everyone in the festive spirit! How you organise the competition is entirely up to you, same goes for the toppings and icing.

A blindfolded competition might be a little messy but it is sure to be funny, whilst you could even work it like a tasty game of Pictionary! Given that there are going to be plenty of cookies for everyone, you don’t even need to worry about how to crown a winner!
